Position Summary

Hakai is currently seeking an experienced geospatial developer to join our Geospatial Technologies team. The successful candidate will play a key role in a dynamic team focused on collecting, transforming, analyzing, visualizing, and distributing powerful spatial data products. In this role, you will work closely with Hakai and affiliate research scientists to design, develop, and maintain geospatial applications and tools. Additionally, you will utilize GIS technologies, spatial databases, and web mapping frameworks to support data visualization, analysis, and the automation of geospatial processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain geospatial applications using programming languages such as Python and JavaScript.

  • Integrate and manage spatial data from various sources, including airborne lidar, imagery, and hyperspectral data, drone imagery, and spaceborne remote sensing data,

  • Identify tasks in geospatial workflows that can be automated

  • Work with geospatial databases (e.g., PostGIS, SQL Server) for efficient data storage, federation, and dissemination.

  • Assist with Machine learning / AI development.

  • Develop web-based mapping applications using frameworks like ArcGIS and Mapbox.

  • Perform spatial analysis, geoprocessing, and data visualization in a variety of environmental research application areas.

  • Collaborate with Geospatial data specialists and software developers to optimize geospatial workflows.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Geography, Earth Sciences, GIS, Remote Sensing, or a related field.

  • 2-5 years of experience in geospatial development.

  • Proficiency in Python (e.g.,GDAL and Rasterio) and/or JavaScript (e.g., React.js, Mapbox GL JS).

  • Experience using Docker and Docker Compose.

  • Experience using Amazon Web Services.

  • Experience with GIS software (e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS) and web mapping technologies.

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with attention to detail.

  • Experience with ArcGIS Enterprise Development and Administration

Bonus Points

  • Background in drones, airborne LiDAR and imaging, Spaceborne optical remote sensing.

  • Background in cryosphere (snow and ice), geohazards, watershed ecology, coastal ecology, oceanography, or other environmental science field

  • Experience with cloud optimized data formats - STAC, COG, COPC.
